“Art has obligation to explain itself to you. If it doesn’t, it’s the art’s fault.”

- The quote was from the local reporters mother who was frustrated at Jackson Pollock's pieces of modern art. She hated the fact that his paintings had no obvious story. she felt that art needs to be understood in order to be enjoyed. She felt that his paintings were mocking her with concepts that only "artsy" connoisseurs of the art world would understand. To the reporters mother, art is only art when it makes sense and shows the viewer an explainable and straight forward story.

In my opinion, the above statement is false. I believe that artists have no obligation towards the viewers of their pieces. If the viewer doesn't understand a certain piece than no one is to blame, art does not have to tell a story, art should be based off of one's own interpretation of the piece whether or not it tells a viable story. Art does not require understanding, art will always be art, even if a group of people are frustrated or bothered by it. Art should make you feel many different emotions, joy, sadness, confusion, calmness, and even frustration.
